The Impact of Israel's Assault on Lebanon

David Berry

The recent assault by Israeli Armed Forces on ordinary Lebanese people and upon the infrastructure of Lebanon is a crime against humanity. The assault has had the political backing of both the US and UK governments whose military forces are currently illegally occupying Iraq and are also engaged in a war in Afghanistan. The assault by Israeli Forces on Lebanon was described by the former head of Israeli military intelligence, Zvi Shtauber, as 'foreplay for the real issue, Iran' (Peter Beaumont, The Observer, Sunday July 30th 2006). This 'foreplay' includes attacking Red Cross convoys (1) whose job it is to protect innocent civilians. It also includes the massacre of innocents and the almost total destruction of Qana (2) and injury and trauma to young children (3). The 'foreplay' has also created an environmental disaster with massive oil spillage at both Byblos Harbour (4) and the beaches of Beirut (5): this alone will have a dramatic impact on Lebanon's tourist industry and subsequently its economy. The 'foreplay' also includes aerial bomb attacks upon the homes of ordinary people (6,7) and upon Lebanon's infrastructure (8). These images are only a small sample of the destruction of Lebanon and our thanks go once again to Dahr Jamail for allowing us to show them here.
